Kanini Z. Rodney-Phillips is physician by day and a writer by night. Her stories are inspired by collective personal and professional experiences having lived in Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, and the U.S. Since she spent most of her early years in the Caribbean, these cultural influences are the strongest. Kanini has a passion for women's health and has spent her adult life creating programs to meet the health and wellness needs of women. Most of all, she loves being a wife and mom, spending time traveling, enjoying art and eating good food with her amazing family. She's a self-described soccer mom who vacillates between avid cheerleader and supportive mom-coach. Writing has always been a creative release for her. In her early teenage years, it became her lifeline, a way to cope with difficult emotions stemming from her father's sudden death. Now writing is a way for her to share childhood memories and experiences and hopefully connect with young readers and inspire lifelong curiosity and learning. Her narrative picture books mainly speak to the beauty and strength of Caribbean peoples and cultures while her non-fiction works seek to increase health and science literacy among children.
